Alannah Myles’ iconic hit written by Christopher Ward and David Tyson is reimagined in celebration of the song’s induction to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

In celebration of Black Velvet joining the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, co-songwriter Christopher Ward collaborated with Serena Ryder and Damhnait Doyle to record a new version of the iconic hit to commemorate the honour. The music video was recorded at Toronto’s Revolution Recording Studio, and directed by Edward Pond with music production by award-winning producer Arun Chaturvedi.

The original version of Black Velvet written by Christopher Ward and David Tyson, made famous by Alannah Myles in the early 90s, hit Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1990. Black Velvet and Myles swept the 1990 JUNO Awards, garnering Tyson and Ward Composer of the Year. That same year, Myles won the Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

The album sold 1.2 million copies in Canada, and has over 150 million streams on Spotify. Black Velvet, was declared a SOCAN Classic in 2004, and will take its place in the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame’s permanent home at the National Music Centre in Calgary, which features a celebrated catalogue of inducted songs that fans can listen to, in addition to displays of exclusive artifacts and one-of-a-kind memorabilia celebrating Canada’s greatest songwriters and Inductees.
