Bonnie Dobson’s Morning Dew to be Honoured at Mariposa Folk Festival

CSHF News

The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Mariposa Folk Festival are proud to announce that Morning Dew,  written by the seminal composer and lyricist, Bonnie Dobson, will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, on Saturday, July 7th, 2018, on the Mariposa Main Stage.

Dobson performed the anti-nuke protest ballad, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar, at the first Mariposa Festival in 1961. Morning Dew went on to metamorphose into a powerful blues-rock protest anthem, with subsequent singers adding lyric variations. It has been covered by artists ranging from The Grateful Dead, Lulu, Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart, The Allman Brothers, and Nazareth, to Long John Baldry, Serena Ryder and countless others. Dobson performed her song with Robert Plant at the Royal Festival Hall in 2013.

“The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame is partnering this year with our country’s most vibrant music festivals and events – coast to coast — to honour the songwriters and songs that are connected to each region,” said Vanessa Thomas, Executive Director of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. “We’re very excited to have Bonnie Dobson join us to perform and induct her song, Morning Dew, at the Mariposa Folk Festival where she first performed the song in 1961.”

According to Mariposa Folk Foundation President, Pam Carter, “It is a distinct pleasure to host this Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction of an important song that was showcased at the very first Mariposa Folk Festival”. Carter added, “Bonnie Dobson appeared at Mariposa six times during the 1960s, and this will be a wonderful homecoming”.

Mariposa Folk Festival takes place July 6th, 7th and 8th, 2018, in beautiful Tudhope Park in Orillia, Ontario, Canada, on the shores of scenic Lake Couchiching. The 3-day festival features song, story, dance and craft and more than ten stages. Tent and RV camping is available on the festival site.

This year’s lineup includes well-known artists like Walk Off The Earth, Alan Doyle, Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets, Larkin Poe, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Bahamas, and 50 plus of the best folk-roots artists on the North American and international music scenes.
